MISSION STATEMENT
Checkerboard Engineering is dedicated to prioritizing safety, sustainability, and mobility while providing high-quality engineering design work. Checkerboard Engineers will work to achieve all the wants and needs of the client while ensuring the prosperity and growth of the surrounding environments. Our ambitions align with the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) grand challenges. Specifically, we aim to improve urban infrastructure in our communities while considering its societal, cultural, economic, and environmental impact. To achieve these goals, Checkerboard Engineering strictly abides by all American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) standards and regulations. Through teamwork, leadership, and continuous learning we aim to put forth engineering design work that improves our communities.

PROJECT BACKGROUND & CHALLENGES
TDOT has requested that the intersection between State Route 32 (U.S 25E) and State Route 345 located in Tazewell, Tennessee be redesigned. Although the intersection has undergone development in the last decade, community members have expressed concerns about large vehicles' ability to make turns as well as traffic conflicts. Checkerboard Engineering aims to remedy these concerns while maintaining our commitment to the NAE Grand Challenges.

SEMESTER 1 - 25% DESIGN
GOALS & SOLUTIONS - INTERSECTION OF SR-32 & SR-345
Checkerboard Engineering is committed to improving the world and advancing the engineering profession by working within the NAE Grand Challenges. Our priority is to improve the urban infrastructure while simultaneously advancing personal learning. Checkerboard Engineering is also committed to abiding by ASCE's primary objective to protect the public. These objectives are at the forefront of the upgrade of the intersection of State Route 32 and State Route 345.
Infrastructure Improvements
Checkerboard Engineering is devoted to improving the transportation system, one step at a time. Within this intersection upgrade project, we plan to revise the geometric design and traffic operations, develop effective drainage structures and pavement design, and produce an efficient construction management system. These improvements will not only provide a smoother operation of transportation, but execute a safer roadway for the public. Specific guidelines provided by TDOT will be analyzed and developed to ensure maximum quality and performance for these revised infrastructure plans for the intersection between State Route 32 and State Route 345.

Advancing Personal Growth
The team is dedicated to promoting an environment where. personal growth is rampant. This project challenges the engineers to collaborate on a multidisciplinary team to design a thorough solution to a real-world problem. Learning how to work well with a team is a skill that will be applied in all aspects of our lives. In-depth design work is required from each individual, meaning we must educate ourselves in our specified discipline. This self-education is necessary for growth as an engineer because it challenges us while preparing us for our work after graduation.
Ensuring Safety
Checkerboard Engineering holds safety as the utmost priority for both for our team and the public of this project. Our plan will be to prepare all parties involved before and during the construction of the intersection redesign. Our team will wear proper safety gear when visiting the site. Additionally, we will produce effective and efficient construction management and traffic control systems for the public.

Conclusion
Checkerboard Engineering is committed to providing the best engineering services possible for the Tazewell community. We believe this work can be completed while keeping the NAE grand challenges at the forefront of our decision making. Doing this will not only provide the best and safest infrastructure, but also lead to personal growth for the Checkerboard Engineering team. We look forward to helping everyone apart of this community and will ensure safety is the top priority during construction processes.
